9.11 Gin Koolaid

During the events surrounding 9.11, I was attending the wedding of two New Yorkers in Poland. These images are from the period we were stranded in eastern Europe and my return to NYC. The term gin koolaid comes from our mispronounciation of the term "thank you", which is so similar in a number of languages and reflects our feeling of gratitude to our host countries during this very trying period.

Aftermath: Hurricane Katrina

I entered New Orleans mere days after Katrina alongside my old friend and photographer, David Richmond, with one of his old assistants, Veronique Roblin. The trip was less a photo expedition and more of mission of mercy... a trip intended to salvage what could be saved of his lifetime archive of work. What resulted was that not only was very little left of Dave’s work, but we witnessed the psychological collapse of a very delicate artist.

I ended up moving back to New Orleans full time and did my best to help other photographers in the Gulf South by co-founding the New Orleans Photo Alliance. The images in this folio happened only as an afterthought to my primary mission there. The two themes that surfaced in this work was the ghost-town feel of the recently abandoned city and the resilence and humor of those diehard citizens that either refused to leave in the first place or were the first to repopulate and pick up the pieces.
